Jim Thompson House

Now is a museum in Bangkok. It is a complex of various Thai structures that the American businessman Jim Thompson collected from all parts of Thailand in the 1950s and 1960s. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand.
  • As Thompson was building his silk company, he also became a major collector of Southeast Asian art, which at the time was not well-known internationally. He built a large collection of Buddhist and secular art not only from Thailand but from Burma, Cambodia, and Laos, frequently travelling to those countries on buying trips.
  • In 1958 he began what was to be the pinnacle of his architectural achievement, a new home to showcase his art collection. Formed from parts of six antique Thai houses, his home (completed in 1959) sits on a klong(canal) across from Bangkrua, where his weavers were then located. Most of the 19th-century houses were dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, but the largest, a weaver's house (now the living room), came from Bangkrua.

  • Sports:

Muay tai

  • Muay Thai in Bangkok - Bright neon lights flood the ring, just like the sun scorching down onto the battleground, revealing two men going through their spiritual 'Wai Khru' (a ceremony to thank their revered teachers, spirits, boxing ring and the sport itself). The blaring sound of Thai classical instruments and the deafening cheering of ecstatic spectators in the stadium don't seem to distract the two 'warriors'.
  • Following the 'Wai Khru' ritual, they go straight into 'Ram Muay', a dance where each boxer demonstrates his skills and style. These pre-match ceremonies are believed to bring good luck, protection, respect, and a fair and honourable fight to the boxers. Once all the formalities are out of the way, it's time for action. But watch out, things can get bloody and gory...

Several diferent types of cycling tour, usually in small group are now organised mostly by independent operators who know the city like the back of their hand.

  • Mezzaluna Bangkok is a truly exceptional fine dining restaurant located on the 65th floor of Tower Club at lebua. Famed for its set menus that come in four or seven courses only, Mezzaluna impresses with a new daily menu of world-class haute cuisine prepared by a visionary chef.
  • Chef Ryuki Kawasaki has worked his way around the world in a game of ‘who’s who’ with culinary giants including Pierre Gagnaire and Joel Robuchon, so it’s fair to say we had sky-high expectations on our latest visit – all of which were exceeded with aplomb.

Issaya Siamese Club Restaurant
Issaya Siamese Club is a charming Thai restaurant so well hidden on a small street near Rama IV Road, even with a map it's not easy to find. Standing proudly in the middle of a luscious green garden, this 100-years-old house with its wooden verandah and old fashioned staircase instantly sets a romantic mood, making it a perfect place for duo dining. This is not another pretty tourist place: Thais, expats and the few travelers who make the effort to discover it are unanimous - the combined charm of a heritage house, exceptional service and the renowned culinary flair of Chef Ian Kittichai makes Issaya Siamese Club an outstanding restaurant.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market
Damnoen Saduak is the most popular floating market in Thailand, great for photo opportunities, food, and for giving you an insight into a bygone way of life. An early morning start is worth it to avoid the heat and catch Damnoen Saduak at its liveliest. Most visitors who come to Thailand want to visit a floating market and many of them will end up here. Don’t let that put you off though, it’s an enjoyable morning out of the city and if you avoid the tourist shops you can get a real sense of the place. The market is over an hour outside Bangkok, and the easiest way to get there is to join a tour.

Nightlife:
Nightlife in Bangkok has evolved over the years, with the emphasis now firmly on swanky rooftop bars, lively nightclubs and hip cocktail bars. The Thai capital now has so much more to offer than just the adult-themed fun of Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy.
Any discussion of nightlife in Bangkok can’t ignore the party scene at Khao San Road, or the more laidback Soi Rambuttri next door, whilst Thonglor across town seems to have a trendy new bar opening up every week. Clubbers in Bangkok are spoilt for choice too, with big names on Sukhumvit, Silom and the gauntlet of superclubs at RCA all packed-out with tourists and locals most nights of the week.
Below, you’ll find all the latest openings, as well as our comprehensive range of Top 10 Nightlife in Bangkok guides for each area of the city.
There is 3 clubs.
  • Ce La Vi (Formerly Ku De Ta) Location: Mammoth Sathorn Square Building

Music: house/hip hop/party pop (depending on the night)
Crowd: Expats, tourists and internationalised Thais

Ce La Vi (Formerly Ku De Ta) was one of the most high profile openings Bangkok has seen in years, creating a buzz right across the city, and with a new name and a fresh start they are still top of the tree for a fun and fancy night out in Bangkok. The club lounge section of Ce La Vi is a sophisticated space with rooftop views from the 39th floor of the massive Sathorn One Building. Music changes according to the night but expect hip hop anthems on Wednesdays (ladies night), deep house on Thursdays, and a mixture of commercial party pop, R'n'B and EDM hits on Fridays, with a more bass heavy tracklist on Saturdays. Dress to impress for this one.
Located on the 39th and 40th floors of the mammoth Sathorn Square Building the views are suitably impressive, with an uninterrupted cityscape from the nightclub section and views to the Chao Phraya River and beyond from your dinner table. When fully revamped, Ce La Vi Bangkok will comprise two restaurants, a central cocktail bar and glamourous nightclub, which is best labelled a lifestyle destination. The grand idea is to wrap up a night out all within one sophisticated space, hopping from restaurant to bar to club.
  • Onyx
  • Location: RCA

Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has slowly been pushing local bands out of the frame when it comes to partying in Bangkok, and RCA’s popular Onyx is the shining example. This 2,000 capacity club has slowly become a Mecca for Bangkok’s bass-heads, with CO2 cannons, confetti drops and awesome laser shows. Onyx is the biggest single party space in Bangkok, with a huge dancefloor and plenty of standing tables and stools. Some European-inspired touches are evident, such as the impressively-high ceiling and a cool LED screen behind the main DJ booth. Entrance is normally 400-500 baht for foreigners, which includes a few drinks vouchers.
The experience of witnessing the best DJs rocking the crowd at Onyx is intense, with dry ice cannons, confetti bombs and the best laser show in the city further adding to the experience.
  • Sing Sing Theater
  • Location: Sukhumvit

Music: Vocal House on weekends/hip-hop on sundays
Crowd: Sophisticated mix of trend-setters and expats
Sing Sing Theater is a fantastical bar-cum-club with the most creative interior design concept in Bangkok. Paying homage to far Eastern aesthetics, you can expect intricate wrought iron patterns, hundreds of lanterns hanging from the ceiling and plenty of dragon imagery to go with the ‘Muses’ (elegant girls dressed in Chinese Qipao). The music at Sing Sing Theater covers a lot of ground, and is far more ambitious than most clubs in the capital. A definite highlight of Sing Sing is the elaborate entertainment providing a treat for the eyes. It's truly unique in Bangkok and promises fun and sophistication in just the right amounts.
Sing Sing Theater reminds us a lot of Maggie Choo’s over in Silom, and it comes as no surprise that it is the same team behind both venues. In particular, the work of Ashley Sutton as the designer strikes a chord as his concepts have been a hit all over town, and this – his most ambitious work – has established Sing Sing as one of the hottest clubs in Bangkok for 2015.

Rooftop Bars in Bangkok:
How many cities in the world can pretend to have more rooftop bars than Bangkok? None we know of...
In our list you can find places to lounge back with a loved one, soak up the city in a full 360˙ sweep, and even party late into the night as a million lights sparkle far below. We climbed them all to create the ultimate list of Bangkok Rooftop Bars and our legs are sore. How many have you done?
Remember that most rooftop bars have a dress code of no sports shorts and no sandals or sleeveless shirts for men.

  • Sky Bar Rooftop at Lebua
  • Location: Riverside - 63rd Floor

Made even more famous by hosting the Hangover II boys during filming in Bangkok, Sky Bar rooftop at Lebua State Tower offers one of the best views in the city. 63 floors up and overlooking the river, it has become a must-do for a sundowner cocktail. Around ten minutes’ walk from Saphan Taksin BTS it is very easy to find, just look up and walk towards the tall cream building with the gold dome on the roof. It may not be the most relaxed experience as people will flock here on a clear day and it gets crowded, but the vista is one you won’t forget in a hurry.
If you arrive before 18:00 (when Sky Bar opens) you can still have a drink and enjoy the view from Distil. This comfortable oyster and whisky bar has an outdoor terrace with a comfortable cushioned sofa area. The view isn’t as good as the main restaurant and bar but it’s slightly more relaxed as no-one is pushing and shoving to take pictures. Because of the popularity of Sky Bar it can sometimes feel like you are at a cattle market. The staff usher you down the steps at an impressive speed, and won't let you take pictures from the top of the stairs. Once you are in the bar area there are no seats and if you are only having a drink it can feel a bit claustrophobic.

  • Above Eleven
  • Location: Sukhumvit - 32nd Floor

Above Eleven is a very popular 32-storey rooftop bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11 that offers a more vibrant experience than most other rooftops in Bangkok. A few things set this bar apart; Peruvian cuisine, modern party music and value for money signature cocktails being the most apparent.
Set over three floors, the view of downtown Bangkok is impressive and far-reaching (despite the lack of riverside views). From here you get a 180-degree panorama of Bangkok, looking towards Siam and the famous row of Bangkok’s shopping malls. There is nothing better than looking down at the slow-moving traffic whilst you enjoy the breeze, drink in hand.
The interior design at Above Eleven is modern and without the formal atmosphere typical of rooftops. Here, steel tree-like structures, gentle neon lighting and touches of fake grass make a great place to actually hang out for the night, rather than just a ‘catch a sunset and go’ type of place.
Proving many tastes and styles are catered for, the music spans genres depending on the day of the week. Salsa nights on Wednesdays sees the dance floor packed with couples swinging and twirling, while Thursdays takes it down tempo with a three-piece jazz band. Weekends are typically lounge house music to attract the party people from Soi 11 wanting to warm up for a night on the town.

  • Speakeasy - Hotel Muse
  • Location: Chidlom - 25th Floor

The Speakeasy Hotel Muse takes you back to the 1920’s Prohibition era when illicit liquor was rolled in the back door by mobsters in Hench coats. Thankfully, you won’t be breaking any laws at this speakeasy, but authentic touches like a bath full of cocktails in jam jars and cool jazz playing in the background keep the vibe unique and funky. With great views over Sukhumvit and towards Sathorn, this rooftop is more unusual than most, but this isn’t just a skyline; the classic vintage cocktails are just as important as the view.
This is vintage decadence at its best, with three different venues over two floors. You enter into the Long Bar, with its polished wooden table and glass domed roof. From here you can either head to the small bar and terrace to your left where you can watch the master mixologists at work and get a great view of leafy Langsuan Road. Like most rooftops they save the real wow factor for the very top, so head through the slightly hidden painted door up to the 25th floor. Surrounded by grey slate domes, there is a terrace, made of imitation grass, set up like an open-air sitting room, with comfy sofas and floor lamps. Three private turrets can be booked for groups, with enough room on the curved leather benches for at least 15.
