The Italy hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, and the Winter Olympics twice: in 1956, in Cortina dAmpezzo and in 2006 in Turin. The country earned a total of 664 medals which makes them the 6th most successful nation of the Olympic history, and the fourth nation with more gold medals, below the United States, the Soviet Union and Germany.
It is a country that has as strong point the following sports: fencing, synchronized swimming, archery, volleyball and rhythmic gymnastics.
In fencing, the Italian Nedo Nadi is the only one, in more than 100 years of Olympic history, winning the gold with three guns.
The Italian delegation has achieved a rare feat on the first day of the London Olympics. The country's athletes have won gold, silver and bronze in women's foil.
France and Italy are two of the great powers of fencing, and certainly will be well represented at the Olympic games.
