Football
History
Football appeared for the first
time on the programme of the Games of the II Olympiad in Paris in 1900. It has
been on the programme of each edition of the Games since, with the exception of
theGames in Los Angeles in 1932, where it was removed owing to a disagreement
between FIFA and the IOC on the issue of amateurism. Women’s football made its
debut on the programme of the Games of the XXVI Olympiad in Atlanta in 1996.
Removal
In 1928, at the 27th IOC Session in
July in Amsterdam, it was decided, as it was “impossible for the International
Association Football Association to come to an agreement with the IOC regarding
the rules of amateurism”, that football would be excluded from the Olympic
programme.
Re-entry
In 1935 at the 34th IOC Session in March in Oslo, it was announced
that a football tournament would be staged for the Games in Berlin in 1936, as
FIFA had accepted the IOC’s rules concerning amateurism.
Men's tournament
The qualifying
tournament, like that for the World Cup, is organised along continental lines.
Most continental confederations organise a special Under-23 qualifying
tournament, although the European qualifiers are drawn from the finalists of
the UEFA Under-21 Championship and South American qualifiers from the South
American Youth Championship, which is a U-20 tournament. For the 2016 Games,
the number of
places allocated to each continent was:
Europe (4), Asia (3), Africa (3), South America (2.5), North America (2.5) and
Oceania (1).
Women's tournament
The women's
tournament is contested between full national sides, with no age restrictions.
One place is reserved for the host country. Of the remaining teams, as in World
Cup contests a specific number of places are reserved for teams from each
continental region; the European (UEFA) teams are chosen from the most
successful European teams in the previous year's World Cup, whilst the other
continental regions host their own qualifying tournaments in the build-up to
the Olympics.
The first
women's tournament was at the 1996 Atlanta Games. USA won the gold medal, and
picked up silver in 2000 after an extra time defeat by Norway. The finals of
the next two tournaments, in 2004 and 2008, also went to extra time, with USA
defeating Brazil both times. In 2012 USA won their 4th the gold medal defeating
Japan 2–1 in the final.
Allocation of
places for each continent in the 2016 Games will be: Europe (3), Africa (2),
Asia (2), South America (2 - including hosts Brazil), North America (2) and
Oceania (1).
Rules
Each
batch is 90 minutes and is divided into two periods of 45 minutes each.
The
game is supervised by a referee.
It
is forbidden the use of hands for handling the ball. They can, however, use the
feet, legs, torso and head.
To
prevent players from the opposing team remain only in the penalty area of the
opposing side, the rule of estoppel was created. It is to prevent or invalidate
a goal that has been made by a player when there are at least two players from
the other team between him line opposing background.
The
winner of the game is that to get to the greatest number of goals.
In
case of tie, they can be made two extensions of 15 minutes at the end of time.
When
a player commits fouls, he may receive a yellow card or a red card. If you
receive two yellow cards or a red card in a match, he is expelled from the game
If
a player performs some physical assault on an opponent, the judge shall set a
penalty in favor of the opposing team.
When
the ball leaves the field by the bottom line, is charged corner is the last
player to touch it was on the defensive, and is charged goal kick is the last
player to touch it was in the attack. In this case, the corner is in favor of
the attacking team and the goal kick in favor of the defensive team.
