South Korea in the Olympics

South Korea in the Olympics

The South Korea participated for the first time of the Olympic Games in 1948, one year after the opening of it’s Olympic Committee.
The South Korean athletes won a total of 215 medals at the summer games, most in the shooting mode with bow and 31 medals at the Winter Games, mostly in short track speed skating. The country has won more medals in these Olympic sports than any other country.
At the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the South Korea took athletes from two male and two female categories, and of course was champion in all categories.
Now in the 2016 Olympics, the South Korea was one of the first teams to qualify in field hockey and men's football.

The 1988 Olympics

The South Korea has hosted the Olympic Games in 1988, in Seoul, with a record participation of 159 countries and 8.391 athletes. The candidacy of Seoul to be the host city of the Olympic Games was motivated by the success of the World Shooting Championship in 1978.
During the Olympics, more than fifteen thousand journalists were in the South Korean capital. The games were transmitted to one hundred and forty countries, making this edition the most watched in history until to that time.
The event contributed to the economic growth of the country and the repositioning of it’s international image. As a result, the country received in the following years several world events such as the World Cup in 2002.
But the game had a negative side because of doping scandals, the most famous of them was the scandal involving the Canadian runner Ben Johnson, he won the race of one hundred meters track and field and had his medal withdrawn after two days.

The animal chosen as mascot of the Olympics was a tiger, because represented the vigor and spirit of the Korean people's struggle.

Regarding the opening of the games, the country organized a parade of four hundred fifty-seven boats on the Han River and built three giant drums for the dragon procession inside the stadium. Over a thousand students also attended the opening. They formed in the center of the stage the word in English "Welcome". Besides the word, the same group formed the designs of the Olympic rings and the official logo of the Seoul games.

In shooting mode with bow, the Korea won all medals in the women's individual competition, something that had never happened in this sport. The country ended in 4th place with a total of thirty-three medals, twelve of gold, ten of silver and eleven of bronze.
