Sailing refers to using sailboats for sporting purposes. It can be recreational or
competitive.
Sailing is the main variety of yachting, and competitive sailing the main variety of yacht racing. A sailing competition is known as a regatta,
usually consists of multiple individual races,
where the boat that performs best in each race is the overall winner. There is
a broad variety of kinds of races and sailboats used for racing from large
yacht to dinghy racing. Much racing is done around buoys or similar
marks in protected waters, while some longer offshore races cross open water.
All kinds of boats are used for racing, including small dinghies, catamarans, boats designed primarily for cruising, and
purpose-built raceboats. The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing,
windsurfing, kitesurfing, model boat racing, dinghy racing and virtually any
other form of racing around a course with more than one vessel while powered by
the wind.
Olympic
Games
Sailing
has been one of the Olympic sports since the Games
of the first Olympiad, held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Despite being scheduled in the first
Olympic program, the races were canceled due to severe weather conditions.
Apart from the 1904 Summer Olympics, sailing has been present in
every edition of the Olympic Games.
EVOLVING DESIGN
Sailing was first
contested as an Olympic sport at the 1900 Paris Games. Since then, the classes
of boats allowed to compete have continually evolved to reflect advances in
yacht design and technology. Equipment advances over the past 20 years have
created a trend towards smaller and lighter craft, placing ever greater demands
on both the athletic and technical capacities of the sailors.
CLASSES
In the olympic sailing
there are a lot of different classes, that is divided in: dinghy, keelboat
(will not be on the Rio Olympic Games), multihull and sailboard
CLASS RULES
The sport is organised under a single set of
rules for racing published by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF).
Olympic racing is now conducted with boats categorised into one-design classes
based on similar weights and measurements.
The top medalists in the Olympic games are:
- Athletes
- Countries (organized by the number of gold medals)
Curiosities
- Sailing at the Olympic Games was known as yatching until 1996.
- One of the most traditional sailing events at the Olympics, the Star class will not feature at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2011, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Board decided to exclude it from the Olympics in Rio. Brazil has won six Olympic medals in the Star class: two gold, a silver and three bronze.
- Women competed with the men in early Olympic sailing races and all events remained mixed until the 1988 Games when the first exclusively women's race was held.
